Three area teenagers are using fitness to hopefully save lives.
Jillian Herman, a 17-year-old junior at Lower Moreland High School, and Alyssa Brieloff and Brielle Yerusalem, both 17 and juniors at Council Rock High School North, have organized a breast cancer fundraiser filled with fitness activities for Friday night at FitLife Performance Training Center in Ivyland.
The five-hour marathon will feature 10 teams totaling more than 90 kids from Council Rock, George School, Abington, Bensalem and Lower Moreland competing in relays for a surprise prize. Each teen raised at least $100 for the event. The public’s invited to cheer them on and donate. All of the money will go to the Eileen Stein Jacoby Fund, which supports research at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
“I’ve always liked helping people and raising money for good causes,” said Alyssa. “Breast cancer runs in my family. My grandmother and my mom’s friends are survivors. I want to help people who have it and find a cure in my lifetime.”
It’s the group’s 10th anniversary and they’re closing in on a total of $1 million raised. Cheryl Herman of Lower Moreland founded the fund for her sister, who passed away from breast cancer at age 45.
“It was a devastating thing and I felt the need to do something about it,” Herman said. “We hope to expand this event and get even more schools involved next year.”

That the guidelines for when an athlete can perform weight training has changed over the years?
A number of years ago youths were deemed ready to initiate strength training when they began to develop secondary sexual characteristics, such as a deeper voice and facial/body hair in boys, and wider hips and breasts in girls. These changes usually coincide with the arrival of the so-called “adolescent growth spurt.” It had been believed that doing any strength training prior to this developmental stage would damage the growth plates and thus, impair or “stunt” growth. While these fears were certainly well intended, it turns out that they are unfounded.
There’s no clear-cut line for determining an appropriate age to begin lifting weights. Research has shown, though, that children as young as 10 can participate in strength training without risk of injury. Caveat: It’s of utmost importance that the strength training be supervised closely by competent and qualified individuals. Also, before strength training is permitted, a youth must be able to stay focused and follow directions.
